An international consortium has found that a repeating nucleotide sequence on chromosome 9 causes amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). It's the most important ALS gene discovered to date. Now, the whole field is waiting to discover how the mutation causes ALS—and how, in some people, indistinguishable mutations instead paradoxically trigger frontotemporal dementia.
