Winning science prizes this week are computer scientists Shafi Goldwasser and Silvio Micali who pioneered advances in digital security to win the $250,000 Turing Award; 17-year-old Sara Volz has won Intel's Science Talent Search for developing algae cells that produce higher-than-normal levels of oil, which could potentially be used as a biofuel; Diana Wall has won the 2013 Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement for her work studying soil creatures; and the Grete Lundbeck European Brain Research Foundation awarded Gero Miesenböck, Ernst Bamberg, Peter Hegemann, Georg Nagel, Ed Boyden, and Karl Deisseroth €1 million for fundamental research into optogenetics.
