Summary

You can drive from Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York state to Fermilab in Illinois in 14 hours, heading due west. To move a major muon experiment from Brookhaven to Fermilab, however, particle physicists decided that a key piece of equipment—the massive but fragile accelerator storage ring—should travel by barge on a 6-week voyage down the U.S. Atlantic coast, around Florida, and up the Mississippi River. The ring's odyssey starts this weekend.
