Japanese stem cell biologist Hiromitsu Nakauchi is pioneering a technique that ultimately aims to implant human pluripotent cells into pig embryos to create replacement human tissues and organs. Japan has taken a step toward lifting a ban on such research using human cells. However, as a result of delays in the approvals process for the ethically fraught research, Nakauchi plans to move his experiments to California.
