Summary

Lots of mice line up at an experiment's starting line, but not all of them make it to the finish. That's just one of the flaws that bedevils animal studies—and, some say, a reason why these experiments often don't pan out in people. There's a push to raise standards and openness in the vast universe of animal research, and hope that doing so will not only improve the quality of science, but also its image in the public eye.
