Summary

Thousands of scientists in the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) are about to lose their jobs as a result of the academy's merger with two sister academies. This week, pink slips were due to go out to about 2000 scientists in the administrations of the three merging academies. And RAS's 483 institutes have begun assessing which of their researchers will hold onto their positions in the new year.
