Summary

Richard Tapia's center at Rice University has an unmatched record of success in helping minority students earn Ph.D.s in mathematics. But when they seek jobs at top-tier universities, he says, they face a form of discrimination every bit as effective as the explicit racial prohibitions of the Jim Crow era.
