As thoroughbreds like California Chrome are bred for speed and performance, they are becoming increasingly inbred. With the sequencing of the horse genome and new research to identify genes that improve performance, owners are beginning to use genetic tests to select which foals to train for racing. Will the thoroughbred breeders also invest in genetic research and tests to breed healthier horses and, therefore, prevent problems caused by inbreeding?
