Summary

In science news around the world, a leading HIV/AIDS researcher and five other delegates to the 20th International AIDS Conference died when Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 was shot down over Ukraine last week, Australia became the first country in the world to abolish a functioning carbon pricing scheme, New Zealand is beginning its largest pest control effort to protect native fauna, and members of a remote Brazilian tribe that recently made contact with the outside world have contracted influenza.
