Since the publication of our Report, Observation of the transition state for pressure-induced BO3→ BO4 conversion in glass, it has come to our attention that similar observation of the transition state was also made in ab initio molecular dynamics simulations of pressurized B2O3 glass, by Trachenko, Brazhkin, and co-workers (1, 2). These authors reported an increasing loss in planarity of the BO3 triangles in B2O3 glass, at pressures above 5 GPa, before their transformation into BO4 tetrahedra. Although not directly comparable, the results of these simulations are consistent with our direct experimental observation of this phenomenon at lower pressures (≤2 GPa) in a multicomponent borosilicate glass. This agreement suggests that such a pressure-induced coordination transformation mechanism is indeed universal to BO3 triangular units in glasses, irrespective of their chemical composition.
