In the Review “Plant and animal sensors of conserved microbial signatures,” subsequent research indicates the following statement needs adjustment: “We now know that XA21 binds to a highly conserved type I secreted peptide called AxYS22 and that sulfation is critical for recognition (5).” Since this Review was published, the Ronald laboratory has demonstrated that Ax21 is not the elicitor of XA21-mediated immunity. Her laboratory has shown that Ax21 is an outer membrane protein; that its secretion does not require raxA, raxB, or raxC; and that a strain carrying a mutation in Ax21 still elicits XA21-mediated immunity (13). The Ronald group has now demonstrated that XA21 recognizes a highly conserved microbial peptide, called RaxX, and that sulfation is critical for recognition (4).
