Pipette Tips

Quite often, generic pipette tips on a multichannel pipette resemble a mountain range rather than perfectly aligned tips. The reason for misaligned tips lies in the widespread generic tip-cone and tip-fitting design, as well as in the memory effect of the tip material, which gradually moves back to its original, nonstretched shape. Unleveled pipette tips on a multichannel pipette can cause issues such as different immersion depths or faulty touch offs of individual tips, leading to negative pipetting results. Integra GripTips feature a positive stop achieved by a shoulder molded into all GripTips, plus a corresponding tip fitting found on all Integra EVOLVE, VIAFLO II, VOYAGER, and VIAFLO 96- and 384-channel pipettes. This design ensures that pipette tips cannot be loaded beyond the positive stop, and that all tips will be at exactly the same height, thus improving the reproducibility and accuracy of pipetting results.

Volumetric Glassware

BrandTech is introducing a line of BLAUBRAND class A, USP-certified volumetric glassware from Brand GmbH. The line includes clear and amber volumetric flasks, graduated cylinders, bulb pipettes, and volumetric pipettes. USP volumetric instruments comply with Class A error limits required by the United States Pharmacopeia (USP). They make an excellent choice for companies that are audited by the FDA or any other U.S. authority. BLAUBRAND is also well suited for companies that are not audited but demand high-quality glassware that meets Class A error limits. Volumetric instruments are individually calibrated on computer-controlled, automated production lines for maximum precision. High-quality inks combined with carefully controlled annealing processes provide durable graduations and long service life. Thermal stress in the glass blanks is eliminated prior to adjustment, so there are no permanent volume changes after heating (up to 250°C).

Inverted Microscope Platforms

The ZEISS Axio Observer family consists of three stable and modular inverted microscope stands for flexible and efficient imaging. These stands combine ZEISS optics with new automation features, allowing researchers to perform multimodal imaging (e.g., fluorescence, widefield, confocal superresolution) of living and fixed specimens. Among these features is Autocorr, a technology that allows adaptation of immersion objectives to varying sample carriers and imaging conditions. The correction of spherical aberrations results in improved image contrast, higher resolution, and more efficient fluorescence detection than is possible with other microscopes. The Autoimmersion option builds up and maintains stable water immersion without traditional problems such as evaporation or air bubbles, and is compatible with multiple water-immersion objectives in the nosepiece. Definite Focus.2 is a hardware option that automatically compensates for focus drift, and enables long-term time-lapse imaging and demanding multiposition experiments. Experiment data can easily be exported to a multitude of file formats and third-party software.

HPLC/UHPLC Columns

Phenomenex introduces new mixed-mode selectivities and particle sizes for HPLC, UHPLC, and preparative work in the Luna column family. The Luna Omega Polar C18 stationary phase delivers a wide elution window and combined high retention for polar and nonpolar analytes. This phase is 100 percent aqueous-stable due to a polar-modified surface, providing the flexibility in solvent and gradient system selection needed to achieve desired polar/nonpolar analyte separation. The Luna Omega Polar C18 is offered in a high-performance 1.6-µm particle for UHPLC instruments, as well as a low-pressure 5.0-µm particle for direct scalability to analytical HPLC or preparative work. The 100% aqueous-stable Luna Omega PS C18 delivers two distinct separation mechanisms at the same time. The particle surface of the PS C18 contains a positive charge that facilitates greater acidic compound retention through ionic interaction, while the C18 ligand delivers general reversed-phase retention.

Human Endothelial Progenitor Cells

AMS Biotechnology (AMSBIO) has expanded its catalog of primary and progenitor cell types and media with a new range of human endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs). Human EPCs are bone marrow–derived cells that migrate into the bloodstream and are able to differentiate into a variety of mature vascular endothelial cell types. Human EPCs are used for cell-based screening of anticancer drugs and for studying aging- and smoking-related diseases. AMSBIO offers various human EPC subtypes including vein, microvascular, and aortic. The gene expression pattern of these EPCs is more similar to that of endothelial cells from tumors, thus they offer the advantage of migrating specifically to human tumors. EPCs are delivered at the fourth passage, either as cryopreserved or proliferating cells in culture flasks. Each cryovial contains more than 5 x 105 cells in a 1-mL volume. Also available upon request are 24-, 96-, or 384-well formats, ready for screening

High-Pressure Parallel Reactor

The Asynt MultiCell is a lightweight, high-pressure parallel reactor designed for undertaking experiments including carbonylation, hydrogenation, catalysis, and supercritical fluid reactions as well as air-sensitive material studies. Used in conjunction with a hotplate stirrer, the standard 316 stainless-steel MultiCell reactor enables users to screen 10 mL x 30 mL reactions in parallel. In response to customer requests, Asynt has developed a range of new features and options for the MultiCell that further increase the versatility of this high-performance system. These new options include the capability of operating up to 350°C and 200 bar, four positions offering reaction volumes of up to 150 mL, the ability to make additions/take samples under pressure, subambient reactor cooling, and individual temperature and pressure controls for each reactor cell.
