  • RE: Cultural and economic factors behind gun violence

While the authors give this only passing reference, you cannot talk about firearms violence without reference to the cultural and economic factors which primarily power it. There is fairly-good concensus across the political divide that such crime tends to be limited to a fairly-narrow group of individuals, many of whom are involved in the illegal drug trade. E.g.,:

Garen Wintemute, generally accorded as extremely antigun: "Firearm homicides among black males aged 20 to 29 are five times higher than those among Hispanic males and at least 20 times higher than for white males. Homicide rates for black females are also higher than rates for Hispanics and whites." https://www.ucdmc.ucdavis.edu/publish/news/newsroom/9562

Similarly, at an Aspen Institute Meeting, antigun crusader Michael Bloombergstated: "..95 percent of your murders and murderers and murder victims fit one M.O. You can just take the description and Xerox it and pass it out to all the cops. They are male minorities 15 to 25. That’s true in New York, it’s true in virtually every city in America. And that’s where the real crime is. You’ve got to get the guns out of the hands of the people that are getting killed." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5L0Zq0MusGA
