Summary

On 11 December, the French government announced the names of the first 18 scientists it has hired as part of "Make Our Planet Great Again," a program set up to lure foreign climate scientists—especially those frustrated by U.S. President Donald Trump's policies—to France. The plan, announced by French President Emmanuel Macron in June hours after Trump said the United States would withdraw from the Paris climate accord, offers 3- to 5-year grants worth up to €1.5 million each. Thirteen of the winners now work in the United States, but the list also includes researchers now based in Canada, India, and European nations.
