Summary

A new battery technology is gaining traction. Known as lithium-sulfur batteries, the devices can hold twice the energy per kilogram as conventional lithium-ion batteries to drive everything from power tools to Teslas. Their drawback is that they tend to be short lived, lasting only 100 charging cycles or so. But new advances coming from battery startup companies and academic labs are renewing hope that lithium-sulfur batteries will succeed in the market. The batteries tend to be light compared with conventional lithium-ion cells, which should encourage their use in applications such as powering unmanned aircraft and underwater robots. But eventually researchers are hopeful that future lithium-sulfur batteries will help electric vehicles match the driving range of their gas-powered counterparts.
