Blood by the clock

Hematopoiesis is the process by which the cellular components of blood are maintained by hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells. Golan et al. found that supporting stem cells in the bone marrow and replenishing mature cells in the blood is coupled to the light-dark cycle. Light, via norepinephrine and tumor necrosis factor (TNF), induces blood replenishment and suppresses stem cell self-renewal, whereas darkness, via melatonin and TNF, promotes stem cell self-renewal and diminishes vascular permeability to increase the pool of cells available for the next day. Understanding the daily rhythm of the bone marrow could have implications for the time of day at which bone marrow and stem cell transplants are likely to be most successful.
