Phylogenetic tree of yeast, plant and animal hexokinases.
Hexokinases from yeast (yellow) and plants (green) and human glucokinase exist as 50 kDa proteins. In contrast, human hexokinases I, II and III (pink) are100 kDa proteins due to fusion of a gene duplication (a+b). The tree was made using domains a and b as independent modules for the sequence alignment. The analysis was performed using PAUP4.0b10 and shows that yeast, plant and human transporter proteins form separate clades. Hs, human; Sc, yeast; At, Arabidopsis.
