About The Cover

The flash of a single biluminescent cell. The dinoflagellate Noctiluca miliaris, stimulated electrically in total darkness by five brief pulses 15 milli-seconds apart. produced a summated flash. Photography of the image was made possible by use of a five-stage image intensifier; an accelerating voltage of 36 kv amplified the intensity of the image approximately 900,000 times (X 270).
