An interfacial film collected on the upstream face of a barrier on the surface of flowing water (i) develops in two or three distinct stages, (ii) has an equilibrium length inversely proportional to the velocity squared, (iii) exhibits a linear decrease in surface tension, and (iv) exhibits an interfacial shear force proportional to the velocity.
