Particle Beam Fusion Accelerator II (PBFA II) at Sandia National Laboratories was activated for the first time on 11 December 1985; it will be used to study inertial confinement fusion with light ion beams. The intense discharges on the surface were formed by the stray electromagnetic energy emanating from the 100-trillion-watt accelerator. See page 831.
