Atmospheric Dynamics on the Outer Planets

Flow patterns in the outer planets are complex and not well understood. In his Perspective, Gierasch comments on new results presented by Cho and Polvani in this issue (p. 335) in which a shallow-fluid dynamical model was used to simulate the atmospheric flows on Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, and Uranus. Several features of the observed flows, including the behavior of the jets and eddies, are captured in the model.
