Summary

Most archaeologists believed that the first large mound complex was built 3500 years ago at Poverty Point, Louisiana. But on page 1796, a multidisciplinary team reports an analysis of another Louisiana site that has extended the tradition of mound-building back by nearly 2000 years--and opened a new perspective on the cultures of ancient North America.
