Summary

An AIDS advocacy group is stepping up a campaign to test "attenuated" HIV vaccines in people, but several monkey experiments suggest that achieving protection without causing disease may be difficult. The new data, which come from several labs, reveal that a vaccine made from weakened SIV--HIV's simian analog--can cause full-blown AIDS in adult monkeys.
