M Vladimir Braginsky and his research group have built the world's steadiest pendulum here in a Stalin-era bomb shelter. Braginsky and his device are at the vanguard of an effort to tune in to gravitational waves from space. Unlike his colleagues building a detector in Kazan (see main text), the sharp-witted Moscow State University professor has thrown in his lot with a major Western project, LIGO.
