The El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) influences year-to-year climate variability in many parts of the world. In her Perspective, Cole discusses the evidence for past ENSO variability and its likely causes. She highlights the study by Tudhope et al., whose New Guinea coral records represent an important step toward understanding what drives ENSO variability.
