In response to a stimulus, neurons carry information in the form of electrical impulses to the correct region of the brain. On this journey, the information becomes modified and processed. In his Perspective, Richmond discusses new findings ( Reich et al.) revealing that information decoding is best accomplished by including knowledge of which neuron emitted the impulse.
