The interaction of water with solid surfaces plays an important role in catalysis and weathering. But as Menzel explains in his Perspective, experimental complications have made it difficult to characterize water layers on metal surfaces in detail, and controversies remain. He highlights the theoretical study of Feibelman, who proposes that water absorption on a ruthenium surface involves partial dissociation. This model may help to reconcile theory and experiment.
