A robust recall response by memory CD8 T cells when they re-encounter antigen is an important way for the immune system to combat bacterial and viral infections. However, CD8 T cells need a little help, as Kaech and Ahmed discuss in their Perspective. During their differentiation, memory CD8 T cells need help from CD4 T cells to ensure formation of a recall response that is robust in both quality and quantity.
