Turbulent processes play an important role in many engineering applications, for example, in the flow of air around cars or aircraft. In his Perspective, Benzi explains why numerical simulations of these processes are computationally extremely demanding. He highlights the report by Chen et al., who use an approach borrowed from statistical physics to simplify the simulations. The approach enables the accurate modeling of flows around complex geometries and may find application in engineering.
