COVER Detail of a plot showing distances between atoms in a thin piece of aluminum rapidly heated by a brief, intense laser pulse. Femtosecond electron diffraction captures the details as the atoms begin to move and the solid melts. The technique can be used to make atomic movies of other processes, including chemical reactions.
