Summary

In his Perspective, Laughlin provides historical context for the research article of Senthil et al., which proposes that quantum number fractionalization might occur at quantum critical points. Laughlin places particular emphasis on the cosmological implications of their ideas and the fact that these can, in principle, be tested with table-top experiments.
