COVER A Metrosideros polymorpha ('ohi'a lehua) forest on the Hawaiian island of Molokai with low stature and biomass. This ecosystem developed in the absence of catastrophic disturbances during the past 1.4 million years. Depletion of phosphorus at this site has led to a decline in forest productivity and decomposition rates. Similar patterns occur in temperate and boreal forests. See page 509. [Image: R. D. Bardgett]
