Summary
In their Perspective, Curtis and Sloan discuss how there is more to the findings of the Gans et al . paper (in the same issue) than the headline finding of 10different bacteria in soil. The estimation of a species abundance curve for a sample of soil is of significance in its own right, forming a mathematical map for the exploration of the microbial diversity of soil.
