COVER Photobleaching in an Arabidopsis plant, the result of virus-induced gene silencing of phytoene desaturase (PDS), an enzyme involved in carotenoid biosynthesis. The plant was infected with a recombinant virus containing a fragment of the Arabidopsis PDS gene, such that the RNA-silencing immune response was programmed not only against the virus but also against the host gene.
