  1. Extreme physiology.

    Elite mammalian divers, such as the whale, can forage under water for long periods of time because of their enhanced oxygen storage capacity, acquired through evolved forms of myoglobin with increased solubility. This maximizes myoglobin concentration and oxygen reserves in muscles.
