Summary
The second week of the U.S. government shutdown found scientists more worried than ever about its long-term impact on research. Three state-of-the-art radio telescopes were forced to shut down, and the U.S. Antarctic program is hanging by a thread. A prolonged shutdown could also halt the construction of two new observatories being funded by the National Science Foundation.
