When responding to chronic infection or cancer, T cells become exhausted and lose many of their core functions. This process involves a fundamental “rewiring†of the cellular regulation of gene expression. Thus, exhausted T cells likely represent a distinct cell lineage. See pages 1104, 1160, and 1165.
