    Dear Mara,

    I read your article with interest. I wish it were possible to write an article critical of the Chinese government and its policies without it reeking in disdain like you did. Science is a science publication, not a political platform to systematically denigrate China. You could have written the same content without the "I hate China and I hate its government" overtone. This reads like a NYT "I hate China" article. But I fear that you might think this is a compliment...

    Hope you are enjoying your time in Shanghai, it's a very nice city actually. Make sure to travel around China a bit too. Do make some real Chinese friends, not just with dissidents. You might learn something and it might surprise you.
