  • Chain of Custody is also required for research

Alison McCook reported about a scientific misconduct in a university (1).
At the present, the validity of the research has depended on the good will of the researcher. However, research fraud has been frequently accused in recent years. This means that the brains in the world that should be used for positive activities are wasted. In Japan, there is an opinion that the research time is decreasing by increasing the procedure of fraud prevention, and research itself is disturbed.
In the Criminal Procedure, all processes of seizure, collection, movement, handling and management of evidence are recorded. It is called Chain of Custody (2). Audits for research funding are conducted as well as corporate accounting. The system that is being implemented outside the academic can be also available for research processes. It is expected to to simplify the reporting task if we are allowed to indicate the location of such appropriately managed research data.
Version control systems such as RCS (revision control system), CVS (concurrent versions system), and SVN (Subversion), Git, Mercurial, etc. have been used as a tool for controlling source codes in the field of information technology. Even document storage on the Cloud that individuals use for free is equipped with version control functions. As I guess that most researchers are already using it, introducing Chain of Custody into research will be only a little change. Let's get time back to researchers by sup...
