Summary

The pursuit of valuable minerals has increased scrutiny of the biology and geology of seamounts. These massive underwater mountains, which can rival some of the tallest mountains on land, are biological oases in the deep ocean. Some are also covered in a crust of metals including cobalt and tellurium, used in making electronics such as solar panels and lithium-ion batteries. As countries work to figure out how to mine these mountains, some scientists are trying to understand how mining might affect these little-understood ecosystems.
