Summary

A freshly discovered exoplanet is, by itself, no longer particularly noteworthy. But one that challenges current theories of planet formation can animate astronomers. On page 1441 of this issue, Morales et al. (1) report the unexpected discovery of a giant Jupiter-like planet (named GJ 3512 b) that traces an elongated 7-month orbit around a nearby red dwarf star (GJ 3512) (see the figure). Although the new world is as yet unseen, the authors inferred its presence indirectly through repeated precise measurements of the Doppler velocity of the star along the line of sight from Earth.
