Summary

In science news around the world, 2019 was the planet's second hottest year in modern history for surface temperatures and the hottest for ocean temperatures, due to warming from greenhouse gases emitted mostly by human activity. Colleagues mourn several dozen researchers and graduate students from Canadian universities who were killed when Iran shot down a passenger jet shortly after it took off from Tehran, in what Iran called an accident. Florida's legislature announces hearings into foreign influences on U.S. research after the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa fired six scientists, including CEO Alan List, for failing to disclose ties to Chinese institutions.
