Christian Drosten, a virologist at Charité University Hospital in Berlin, is one of the world's foremost experts on coronaviruses; his career has closely tracked their emergence as a global threat. Now, he is also a popular—if nerdy—hero. His weekly appearance on the podcast Coronavirus Update has made Drosten the face, or rather the voice, of the pandemic in Germany. Drosten's calm, considered communication has earned him widespread appreciation, and he has also advised German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Minister of Health Jens Spahn.
