COVER Greenland sled dogs do the same job their ancestors have done for countless generations. Sequencing of a 9500-year-old dog genome reveals that modern dogs—particularly sled dogs—were genetically distinct from wolves by the early Holocene. Of all modern sled dogs, the Greenland sled dog shares the most genomic ancestry with the first sled dogs, emphasizing the conservation value of this breed. See page 1495.
