COVER The ancestors of the carrion crow diverged from the mammalian lineage as early as 320 million years ago. Carrion crow brain activity suggests that sensory consciousness developed either before the emergence of mammals or independently in the avian lineage and may not require a cerebral cortex, as we know it.
