About The Cover

COVER A 7-week-old spotted hyena cub explores the area around its den in Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya, while its mother looks on. The cub, still in its natal coat of fur, has already started to learn which clanmates its mother associates with most closely. This months-long learning process is most likely the mechanism by which young hyenas "inherit" their mothers' social networks. See pages 274 and 348.
